I'm new to this game and i seem to be having problems getting back to the menu AFTER doing a few laps around the track.... any suggestions??

Simply press the ESC key and klick "Return To Pit".

it might sound stupid but i pushed the ESC key and nothing happens... any suggestions???

Does the ESC key work in other KRP menues? E.g. start KRP, enter settings and push ESC. This should bring you back to the main screen.
If it doesn't work, do you have a background program running which is also using the ESC key?

I'm also a newbie to KRP and I had my most successful run yet last night by running GameBooster first to get rid of all the unwanted background programmes.
