Stuck "Syncing"

I recently purchased KRP and I have not been able to join any multiplayer races with other players. It always just hangs on the "syncing" screen until I press cancel. I have left it as long as 30 minutes without it connecting or timing out. I have been able to join the DrivingItalia server but only when no one else is in the server. I tried hosting a race and saw a number of people attempt to connect and disconnected repeatedly. When I checked the chat menu it showed anyone attempting to connect as "sync" until they disconnected. So it seems others have the same problem connecting to a race I host that I have when I try to connect to races others are hosting. What can I do to fix this?
