Title: Paint creation tutorial
Post by: PiBoSo on August 22, 2010, 12:06:32 AM
Paints are used to change liveries of kart and driver.

To add an helmet paint:
1) Download the templates: http://www.kartracing-pro.com/?page=downloads
2) Create a texture named helmet.tga or helmet.bmp
3) download PaintEd: http://www.kartracing-pro.com/?page=downloads
4) create the directory structure driver/helmets/sk6/paints
5) Using PaintEd, convert the texture to a paint, saving it in the previously created "paints" folder.

To change helmet's visor:
1) Create two textures, named visor.tga and visor#2.tga ( for rain )
2) Move them to the same folder of helmet's texture
3) Using PaintEd, convert the textures to a paint.

Inside Kart Racing Pro, when in "viewer" mode ( click on the dot in the bottom-right corner of main menu ), it is possible to reload a paint from disk pressing the 'r' key.

I searched around and tried to open up a .pnt file with this PaintEd program. But every time I try to open the white.pnt it crashes the program.

Anything you can think of?

Can you use Photoshop as well?
Title: Re: Paint creation tutorial
Post by: BlackEye on December 07, 2010, 03:10:09 PM
You use some program to make a paint (photoshop, paint, gimp etc).
Save file as .tga or . bmp
Use PaintEd to convert your .tga/.bmp image file to .pnt file.
Use that .pnt file in KRP.

PaintEd is just a tool to convert .tga/.bmp to .pnt, it's not image editor program.

I am having the same trouble not being able to see my helmet design in game. It shows the name in the drop down box when selecting the helmet, but when selected, shows the plain white helmet on the driver...

When you open your .pnt file with PaintEd, on the left side does it say 'helmet'? Does clicking on it show your paint correctly on the right?

How do we get a suit to show?
All I can get is the helmet. :-\

[edit]
Just after I posted I thought of something I hadn't tried, put it in the 'kart' folder.
Works like a charm. ;D

Could someone give me step by step description how to get suit and kart to show ingame?

Ive read earlier posts and get kind off confused when "kart folder" is showing up since i dont have one?

Extract the file karts.pkz with winrar and you have the file in your kartracing directory.
That is the easiest way.
And then read the wiki from page 1.

I can get the bodywork to show up, I put that in the karts/ks1/paints folder but I cannot get the chassis to show up. Seriously I am retarded when it comes to this and I need someone to hold my hand and walk me through this.

Piboso can you tell us please which parts of karts are paintable? i tried some and found the airbox, axle, chain, pedal, radiator, seat for this you have to rename the tga to TK_seat and the other parts what`s with rims and steering wheel and chaincover? don`t find the correct names. is that possible?
Title: Re: Paint creation tutorial
Post by: Racehard on April 22, 2011, 08:57:45 PM
And how about shadow and details on the parts if you do it the way schwoni suggested?

PiBoSo could you make these paints accessable, so that we could change the colour of a metal or else (pedals, radiator, clutch-,brake lever or steering wheel) easily with photoshop, without loosing any detailed texture stuff like the shadows etc.
That would be really awesome :)

What happened to TK_radiator and TK_airbos and TK_seat? I made a  cool seat as did Schwoni. And I added a black radiator.  My paint was very close to my actual kart

Hey guys, first post for me.

Tried to make my own helmed and it worked fine at first.
After I made some changes via gimp on the templade and safed it to Silver_Helm.tga (like I did bevor) and packed it with painted.exe to the game folder\driver\paints\, it doesnt work anymore :(.

That was my first try:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfWSbMI_Jf0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfWSbMI_Jf0)

after my chanings my folder and ingame looks like that:

But as you can see, the helmed is still the base one.

Any ideas?

Kind regards

Silver

its is proabably your paintED filenames
they should be

helmet.tga
visor.tga
visor#2.tga (for rain)

or it wont work

Thank you evo1087,

that was the problem.

.png can be named freely
.tga has to be helmed.tga

I got i now  :)

Title: Re: Paint creation tutorial
Post by: Racehard on June 21, 2011, 10:03:03 PM
You don't necessarily need to create a zip file, just create an equally named folder (structure).

...\Kart Racing Pro\driver\paints\yourhelmet.pnt

But of course you have to put a .pnt file together with paintED containing your helmet.tga.

I have a question about the steering wheel template. The template size is 512x512. Is it just a material color sort or if I put different colors to different sides, will I be able to make a steering wheel that has a white top, black from the middle and red in the lower part? The one coloured wheels are kind of dull...

Congrats, I think it's a great idea the new helmet one. It will be much more easier to create new designs on the new one.

What's the advantage of the new helmet?

Why was it hard to create paints for the old one? There was a typical template which already made it quite easy.

Myself and many others think that the old shape was almost perfect, compared to the real gp5.

The advantage of the new helmet is easy to see... there's no spoiler on it.
I have no problems with it, maybe yes at first designs but I think it's better not having that spoiler in the way more people can manage their own designs in an easiest way.
I mean only to give the opportunity to people who don't know too much about Photoshop and all that stuff and who want to paint their own helmet.
For advanced users I'm agree with you, there's no advantage at all when you know where to paint to have all the lines matched together.
So... maybe PiBoSo could maintain both helmets in game to choose which one you want to use.

Well ok, but it is not just that there is no spoiler now, the whole 3d model changed  :-\

I would suggest then, the old helmet available in two version, one with spoiler and the other with these little vent outlets.

It's better to maintain both 3d models. As we have right know with the Tony Kart and CRG chassis.
I would say the new helmet one is quite the same as the real Arai GP-6 or the SK-6 one.

Assuming you mean not showing up in game, make sure you're naming the paint with in Paint ED than hitting pack.

I mean I don't know how to load my file into PaintEd, and when I hit pack it doesn't show up in the location it's in. Am I supposed to hit a different button?

First off make sure you're saving everything as a TGA then you want to hit directory read find the location you saved the file and select it. When you've done that you'll see the name of the file and a preview make sure you select the file name and then once you've don't that name tithe paint in the text bar down at the bottom and hit pack.

Thx mate
