Title: Kart Simulator Hardware - Cockpit Setups
Post by: SimRacer on June 21, 2011, 07:02:42 PM
Hi,

I thought would share some details on a hardware project for my simulator setups. Feel free to add details of your own.

I just bought a chassis and I am going to turn it into a setup for kart and open wheel style sims. I will mod it to run from a bottom mounted G27/G25 turning the steering shaft. At this stage I plan to make the pedals work with a hall effect sensor input. I will also adapt a shifter and clutch system. I will post more images and build details as I progress for anyone interested.

always wanted a rig like that.. after broked my G27, been thinking some fresh stuff, so anyone knows is this fanatec's GT3 RS wheel worth of money?
also been thinking to get 2 new monitors, same one's im using now, so could do that 3-monitor thing :p
and aaalso if im getting these things, frex shift+ shifter would be useful too  :)

I read a lot of bad reviews from users about the GT3 RS wheels. Problems with the force feedback playing up. The new Thrustmaster TS 500 looks like the best wheel on the market at the moment.

Post by: Timba on June 22, 2011, 08:57:13 PM
well I have to forget that TS 500 cuz it's around 500euros here in Finland, too much for me  :-\

was thinking if I get G27 again, then that chilicoke's adapter (guess u got it too?) and some nice sparco or momo wheel :p

anyways it's summer, my time goes mainly with riding motocross so this simracing sh*t will happen in fall, if it happens  :D

but keep doing that kart rig thing!  :)

I used to have the chillicoke adapter, it works great. I now have a MOMO quick release system.

The G27 is probably still the best value for money.

tell me more about this momo quick release thing,

http://www.weaksauceparts.com/store/product.php?productid=18791&cat=1929&page=1

is this one right for G27 then? that adapter fits with G27?

Here is our Sim almost finished at our KARTSHOP. as our local track in it which we are just finishing. have a leaderboard with it like on top gear where you get your fastest time put up on the board for people to see and beat...

Cool! Looks awesome!

I noticed you mounted the G27 up near the wheel. I am taking a different route, running the steering shaft all the way through the chassis, elevating the kart and mounting it underneath. Here is a pic of the steering gear so far. I will trim the shaft down once I have the G27 in place. Im not sure how well it will work out but worth a try I guess.

As long as you can effectively remove any play or flex, it should work fine. ;)

There will be zero flex with the setup I have designed. It will use the standard kart steering shaft guides and the G27 will be hard mounted. That shaft is also solid, not hollow. Once I have it setup I will post a pic.

Thanks PiBoSo!. I'm John, and I'm working on making Kart Racing Pro work with CXC's simulator. Thanks for making the plugin interface so accessible, but can I ask you to check out the code that outputs some of your telemetry? The X, Y, and Z accelerations jump around quite a bit until you get up to speed. Here's a video that shows what I mean and the effect it has on the simulator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPeuSwSxWkM

Do you need more or different output data?
Maybe something changed from local to world coordinate system or vice-versa?

Small update to the progress of my setup. Had the frame cleaned up with a soda blast. Starting to get all the parts setup to make the necessary mods to the frame for mounting things like the shifter etc.

Ok, here is a bit more complete video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CEECkKCP2c

The wheel is not completely done yet, but it's close.  We're also waiting for some view height adjustment capability in the next release so we can dial in the visuals.  With the height of our monitors, we need to lower the view height and level out the pitch.

Another update on my hardware project. Done the following:

- New seat installed, got it painted black.
- Mounted the shifter (switches and bottom mount bracket not complete)
- Mocked up the brake pedal setup. Uses G27 pedal and kart brake rod. Modified one end of the clevis to accept an M5 eyelet bearing. Will have   APElectrix load cell installed.
- Ran cables for clutch and throttle, G27 pedals to be mounted in usual spot for motor. Brackets to made for the cable tensioners.

nice work sim racer.  keep posting your pogress. very interested in this.  maybe you can elevated it on a table so its not floating and the steering box under the table.  my idea was to use a projector set to wide screen on slightly curved background. no idea of that would work or if the picture would distort. it would be a great unobstructed view
Title: Re: Kart Simulator Hardware - Cockpit Setups
Post by: SimRacer on August 23, 2011, 01:11:55 AM
Thanks evo. It is only on the table at the moment while I am working on it. The plan is to elevate is slightly off the floor with some short mounts and castors. The G27 motor will then be mounted under the floor pan of the kart. I will be working on that bit soon.

As for the screens, I will be using triple screen mounts from an Obutto sim rig as they are a very cost effective option. Your curved projector screen idea is used in a number of other sim applications I have seen, and there is special software that you can get to take the distortion out of the image. A triple projector setup would be AMAZING, especially in 3D if you go for something like the cheaper Acer 3D ready versions.

Small update on progress. Got the mounting solution complete for the shifter lever, and brake and throttle pedals. Now working on a cable gyro system for the clutch cable which can be seen in the picture below. I could go with a magnetic hall sensor that is integrated into the clutch lever but I'm trying to retain the feel of using a cable.

Haha, that would be cool. Too bad I dont have the rims and tyres for it.

Progress has slowed a little on the project due to that old excuse called "a job", but I recently got a great deal on some G25 and G27 parts for the project so I will get back into the task of mounting the G25 steering motor soon.

Have not had a lot of time to work on this project so this is only a small update. Installed an apelectrix load cell in the brake. Also mounted the throttle and cable to run it. Throttle and clutch mounting and adjustment system are still a work in progress, so is the clutch.

Hi Guys,

Sorry about not posting in a while. As with all these projects, work that actually pays the bills has taken over and I have not had a lot of time to work on it. I sold my other motion rig so I really want to finish this project so I can at least have one sim setup to use.

I recently setup a new workbench so I will finish of the project in the coming months. I also have all the parts now and it's just a case of making up the mounting system for the G25 motor, a free floating clutch perch, paint and making some stands.

Cheers.

G'day, guys.  I know I'm slow but I made a little progress with the G27 FF motor mounting on the weekend.  The footwell is mounted in and the hole drilled for the steering shaft to pass through.  The G27 FF motor will be mounted upside down (underneath footwell) to make the job of building a mount easier.  The mount itself should be done by the weekend all going well, so I should be able to post a video of it plugged into my laptop and referencing itself.  Once that is done, I will consider adding a linear bearing to the system to take up some of the load of the steering shaft from the G27 motor.

I decided not to go with the gyro style cable system for the clutch.  There is not enough clearance for the clutch lever and the shifter during the 720 deg rotation of the wheel, so I need to come up with a static mount for the clutch lever.  Not as realistic but a necessity.

One thing I need feedback on is the feedback felt from engaging gears on the shifter lever, as I need to purchase/build a switch system.  I have tried to watch as many videos on youtube as I can to take a guess, so if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Another idea I have been playing with is adding an airbox with an ultrasonic sensor inside to pickup a hand placed across it, now that this feature is in the game. Thoughts?

I'm dedicating myself to finishing this soon, then I will be trying to sell it as I need the space in my house.  If you are in Australia and interested, I will sell it any any stage of completion.

Things left to finish:
- Mount steering shaft linear bearing (optional)
- Create static mount for clutch lever
- Choose gear switching system
- Mount gear switch system
- Mount clutch G27 actuator
- Build stands with castors
- Attach obutto triple screen stand system (optional)
- Clean up frame
- Paint/Powder coat frame

Had another idea. To automate the "tuck" movement, an ultrasonic sensor could be mounted behind the seat pointing at the driver. When the driver tucks his head and the beam is broken it activates the tuck input.  I can implement this stuff in PIC C and share the code for others if you are planning to build your own kart hardware setups.

Actually a simple infrared switch is easier to implement. Can hook these up directly to a joystick interface.

Made a little bit of progress tonight.  Fabricated the bracket for the G27 motor.  Unfortunately I made a mistake welding it to the kart chassis, causing the steering shaft angle to be incorrect.  I will grind it off tomorrow afternoon, remount it correctly and then upload some pictures.  Should be able to plug in the G27 and watch it calibrate itself.  Getting very close to actually being able to give it a trial run :D

Here is our Sim almost finished at our KARTSHOP. as our local track in it which we are just finishing. have a leaderboard with it like on top gear where you get your fastest time put up on the board for people to see and beat...

if u have that original wheel of that kart it would fit.
look at my g25

Thanks for replying I think there might be a way to do it if you connect the potentiometers to the kart pedals.

If you can work out the pin out for the connector, the voltage and the resistor values, you could hook up any type of pedal system you want to eg. Hall sensors.

Are your pedals in any way modded because I know for the G27 and G25 there are many mods to make the brakes better

Only the brake. I have an AP Electrix load cell installed.

Yes. It only changes the feel of the action. My pedals are basically standard, all I did was mount them on the chassis.
