There hasn't been any news about steam for a long time now, but it has been said in the past that your key will transfer to steam.
It's been asked a lot but we should be able to race with steam users or Piboso will generate steam keys.
Also you can get the steam overlay and launch the beta with steam anyway.
Any news? We will get our steam keys?

Work is in progress on a web page to convert the standalone key to a Steam one.
It will take several days. Thank you for your patience.
In the meantime, it's still possible to use the standalone version, that is constantly updated.

when i try doing it it says my key is invalid but I can still play the game normaly...

It has changed since I first bought krp but has changed it on paypal as well so should work?
